Tensions flare between the Saviors and other communities in Sunday night's episode of 'The Walking Dead.'

At the bridge, tensions continue to grow. New Savior bad boy, Justin (Zach McGowan who you might recognize from The 100 or Shameless) is stirring up trouble. He's a rabble-rouser along the lines of Jared (and they both have J names, go figure.)

We know Justin is bad news when he knocks down Henry because he wants more water and the boy won't give him any more than his fair ration. Henry uses his staff to knock Justin back down and it's only when Daryl intervenes that things cool off.

We get snippets of conversation about Saviors having gone missing as well, though we don't learn what's happening to them.

Things come to a head when a the Saviors responsible for drawing off a herd of walkers fail to do so, leading to panic at the lumber site. Aaron and a couple of Saviors are stacking logs and the one above Aaron holding it by a rope lets go in a moment of panic. Aaron manages to push another guy out of the way but gets crushed by the falling log.

Daryl and the others manage to get him out from under the log, but there are too many zombies for Daryl to manage on his own. Fortunately Rick and Carol and some other heroic types show up just in the nick of time. They fight off the zombies, but Rick is forced to use the stacks of logs as a walker trap, shooting out the rope holding the lumber and sending it crashing down the hill into the zombie horde.

We've learned that Enid has been taking doctor lessons from Siddiq which, for the very first time, makes Enid an actually useful character (at least since we all thought she was a spy for the Wolves.) When they bring Aaron to her, his arm is crushed. Enid is forced to amputate. It's . . . really gross and a great scene. This entire scene was great, filled with great tension and rousing action.

I was a little hard on Aaron (well, on Ross Marquand) last season but I'm starting to think it was more about bad writing and direction than the acting. I think he did a great job in tonight's episode, and I'm bummed out that he lost an arm especially since he has a kid to take care of now.

Guns (or bullets at least) are in short supply, so most of the zombie culling is done with melee weapons and bows. One of the Oceanside women has a harpoon gun.

In any case, Daryl is livid and tracks down Justin who, once again, is the problem child in this scenario. He shows no remorse for failing at his responsibility and Daryl proceeds to beat the living daylights out of him before Carol gets him to stop. Later, Justin tells Rick to 'keep your dog on a leash' and Rick exiles him.

Rick is starting to see the fragility of his vision, the futility of getting everyone to work together and get along. When he apologizes to Aaron for what happened, Aaron reassures him: 'It's not the end of the world anymore,' Aaron tells him. 'It's the start of a whole new one.' Maybe, but nothing worth doing comes easy, and Rick has some big holes in his plan (as usual.)

For one thing, while Negan is locked up he's hardly the only Savior to do horrible things to other communities. While the Allies helped rebuild Germany after the overthrow of the Nazis, they didn't just let all the Nazis go free. There were trials and hangings and a whole process in place to hold those responsible for war crimes and other atrocities accountable. In Rick's post-war world, only Negan is held accountable, and that's led to plenty of anger and mistrust between the communities.

When the day is done, however, things still look a lot better than they did. There's laughter and tenderness and romance is in the air. Carol even asks to see the wedding ring that Ezekiel has been holding onto. He tries to get down on his knees to make a proper proposal but she stops him.

'But I wrote a speech!' he exclaims.

'I'm sure you did,' she replies with a smile. 'And you can read it to me later.' A not-so-subtle nod to last season's endless speeches, perhaps? A clever way to sneak in a bit of self-deprecation in the middle of a sweet scene between two lovers.

Meanwhile, Anne and Gabriel make out to the sounds of frog mating calls. They've formed a surprising romance of their own, and it's nice to see both characters warm to one another and share their stories (or at least Gabriel's.)

But things take a very curious turn when, in the second-to-last scene we see Anne on her watch much later in the night. She's keeping lookout when a helicopter flies overhead. A look of concern (or perhaps desire?) comes over her face. What could it mean?

The final scene of the episode stars Justin, once again, as he makes his way from the bridge camp back to the Sanctuary in the dead of night (not really the wisest move in a zombie apocalypse.) He sees someone off the side of the road and it's someone he recognizes. He approaches, saying 'Christ, you damn near got yourself killed, what the hell are you---' and that's when whoever it is takes him out. We're not 100% sure he's dead, but it certainly looks that way.

The Hilltop

The less interesting and exciting of the two main plots takes place at the Hilltop, where Michonne shows up to plead for supplies for the Sanctuary and Maggie retorts that they haven't received their ethanol. Perhaps whoever is disappearing the Saviors has disappeared that as well. Perhaps we have someone purposefully stirring up trouble?

In any case, Michonne acts as the voice of reason, arguing for established laws rather than the whims of leaders. She also argues that the blacksmith's wife, Tammy, should be allowed to see her husband. Jesus agrees and tells Maggie as much. When she questions his loyalty to her, he tells her 'She's not wrong.'

'I think you're a good person,' he adds. 'And good people can disagree.'

Walking

I keep quoting lines from the episode because the dialogue is just so vastly improved over the past couple seasons. It's a little bit shocking, to be honest. We've gone from barely comprehensible conversations to real dialogue, filled with good lines and interesting ethical conflicts.

In any case, Maggie relents and let's Tammy see her husband, Earl. Then she goes down and talks to him and he tells her about his past as a drunk. Earl is played by John Finn, who gives a great performance in this scene. He manages to crack through Maggie's defensive walls and she decides to set him free (mostly) and put him back to work at his incredibly important job.

Another interesting moment of dialogue occurs between Jesus and Maggie. They discuss Georgie---the woman who gave them the book of knowledge---and how she's been writing Maggie letters. In those letters Georgie asks Maggie to come with her. I guess the weird twins she travels with aren't enough help, and for whatever reason she thinks Maggie (and baby Hershel?) would make a good member of the team.

This seems like a pretty obvious way to write Lauren Cohan out of the show without having to kill her off, leaving the door open for her to return in the future or guest star.

Verdict

All told this was a solid episode of The Walking Dead. I'd say it was even better than the Season 9 premiere, simply because it didn't make any of that episodes big mistakes. It was definitely more of a slow, character-building and world-building episode, but the big action at the lumber yard was tense and exciting and it was crazy to see Aaron lose his arm.

I also like that we're left with several big mysteries in the end: The mysterious helicopter; the disappearing Saviors; and what's going to happen with Negan. He leaves things more than a little ominous at the end.

Rick tells him about the hard day and how, in the end, things worked out.

'It's human nature to come together,' he tells his nemesis. Negan disagrees.

'When it finally goes to shit, and it will, make sure you come and tell me about that day, too,' he says.

'That bridge, it's not the future. It's a monument to the dead. You're not saving the world, Rick, you're just getting it ready for me.'

Once again, these are probably some of Negan's very best lines. If he'd been written like this from the get-go I might not be so annoyed with him! That goes for other characters, as well. Ezekiel is toned down a lot and it makes him less like a cartoon character. Eugene still talks funny, but he's not so overbearing. Meanwhile the focus has really shifted to core characters that audiences want to watch. All good developments.
